How to maintain your watch
By owning a valuable Solomon LEROI Timepiece, a luxury mechanical watch, it should be properly respected and cared for, rich in memories and in financial cost. A piece like that deserves your love and care – and with the below tips it will help your watch survive until you can pass it down.
Always clean your watch - This is a simple way to get rid of the dust and other dirt on the watch’s dial, bracelet or strap. Clean it by preparing a mixture of water and any mild soap, plus a soft piece of cloth or a cleaning brush with soft bristles. Gently clean the watch by brushing its bracelet and other parts. However, make sure that you checked its crown to be in its proper position. Otherwise, the water may seep inside and cause permanent damage to the watch. Lastly, dry your watch and keep it in a safe place.
Service Regularly - Service your watch every two or three years, regardless of our warranty length. Like you service your car regularly and change oil, this is one way to know if some of its parts or gears are almost worn out and need to be cleaned. This way, it will not affect your watch’s performance. Contact us to send us your watch for servicing.
Avoid Magnets - Don’t place your automatic watch near a cell phone, speakers, radio, TV, etc, since those electronic devices create a strong magnetic field. Mechanical watches exposed to anything containing a magnet can and will cause these watches to run incorrectly. The watch may run fast, slow, or even stop. One of the most common culprits is the cell phone. Bring your watch to a watch service expert to have it quickly demagnetized. If the watch is severely magnetized, a complete maintenance of the movement may be necessary.
Water Resistance - Some watch lovers are not aware of their watch’s limits and take their watch too deep. All of our Solomon LEROI watches are water-resistant, but some up to 50 meters, which is not recommendable to take to snorkeling events. If your timepiece cannot handle the depths, the rapid change in pressure may be beyond its limits. If the band of your watch is made of leather, its best to avoid moisture as often as possible as it can weaken the material. It is also important to remember that water resistance is not a permanent condition, and it must be tested and renewed periodically. Gaskets and seals used to seal the watch deteriorate over time and will need to be replaced.
Swimming with your watch - If your watch is designed for water activities, be sure the crown is pushed down or screwed in tightly before wearing it in water.
While in a moist environment, do not operate or adjust the crown and/or push buttons as water can seep into the case.
After contact with chlorinated or salt water, immediately clean the watch with fresh water and dry with a soft cloth.
If the watch has a 'rotating bezel,' be sure to rotate the bezel while cleaning to dislodge any debris (sand or salt).
If the watch has a screw-down crown, be sure to secure it after the watch has been wound and set to ensure the water- tight integrity of the watch.
Keep Our Watch Box for Storage - When not wearing your watch, it’s best to keep it in the box it came in. By setting the watch on its side or on the crystal, there is always the possibility the watch could get scratched. The watch box is made to keep the watch safe and offers protection for the watch.
Extreme Temperatures - Moisture and drastic temperature changes and temperatures above 60°C/140°F and below 0°C/32°F can affect timekeeping and water resistance to most watches. Sunlight can fade the color on your watch.
Avoid Contact With Chemicals - Cleaning supplies, oils, cologne and perfume, all bad news. Perfume especially can damage leather bands, weakening them and potentially causing it to tear. When spraying perfume or cologne, let it completely dry before placing the watch on your wrist. Your watch, like your expensive diamond jewelry – should be the last thing you put on when you get ready (before your jacket). When cleaning your watch, do not use powerful cleaners. Simpler is better.
Never Open Your Watch - This will not only void our 5 Years Warranty, but by opening your watch can expose it to dust, dirt, and other particles that can get inside the movement, so it’s best to contact us for any servicing.
Wear it daily - For optimal performance, the automatic watch is to be worn every day and be active. To power up an automatic timepiece, give the crown about 20 to 40 turns and put the watch on your wrist. If your automatic watch is worn daily, wind it once every two weeks. Wind the watch twice a week if it is not worn daily.
For Setting The Date - Avoid setting the date between 9 pm and 3 am as doing so can damage the movement's gears and pinions. Be sure to adjust the date outside of this time period.
Clean a Leather Watch Strap - To clean your leather watch strap, follow these steps - 1)Remove the strap from your watch and use a dry microfiber cloth to wipe off both sides. Doing this will ensure any trapped dirt will not scratch the leather in the next step. 2) Then, dampen — do not soak — a jewelry cloth and apply a tiny drop of mild hand soap or saddle soap to the cloth (about the size of half a dime). Do not aggressively rub the leather back and forth; instead, use tapping movements and move in a gentle circles, applying light pressure and paying attention to spots with dirt. Gentle soap is best, because harsher soaps can strip the leather. 3) With another damp cloth, gently wipe the leather clean. Don’t use too much water, as it can cause damage to the leather. 4)Give the strap plenty of time to fully dry before wearing it again. 5)Condition the leather with your favorite leather oil or conditioner to soften and protect it if you want to. Follow the conditioner product's instructions.
Read Our Watch Manual - These steps will most likely apply to the care of every Timepiece. However, there are certain things that are specific to each of our collections and these tips will most likely be listed in the watch manual.
